Chow calls for more details
on Malay enclave plan
Penang chief minister says the state government welcomes a plan to develop a 40-hectare area, allowing for more Malay residents in George Town.
He said the state government would not discourage any party from developing land in Penang to increase property ownership among Bumiputeras, Bernama reported.
However, the state government needs detailed information if the proposed plan by the Penang Malay Association (Pemenang) is to be implemented as UDA Holdings Bhd, the leading property developer, could begin studying the suitability of the land for this purpose.
Chow said the state government welcomed and encouraged Pemenang’s idea and the interest of UDA in developing land to increase Bumiputera property ownership in the state.
Pemenang president Yussof Latiff was reported to have suggested that land in the Datuk Keramat-Jalan Perak-Jalan Pattani area could be developed, resulting in 10,000 Malay residents being brought into George Town.
he told a press conference in Bukit Mertajam after closing a UDA carnival. The areas are Malay areas that might include wakaf land and others for the development of Bumiputera properties in urban areas,
Chow said UDA’s project in redeveloping the old Malay kampung in Tanjung Tokong could serve as an example for other areas in Penang in efforts to develop land involving Bumiputera and Malay interests.
Pemenang was reported to have drafted a five-year plan to enable Malay families of various backgrounds and occupations to return to the island after being forced to seek housing elsewhere because of high property prices on the island.
The plan focuses on the areas around Jalan Pattani, Jalan Perak, and Jalan Sungai Pinang in East Jelutong, covering an area of about 40 hectares.
UDA chairman Annuar Zaini said the agency is keen to offer its expertise to the federal and state governments to help implement the agenda of Bumiputera property ownership, particularly in urban areas.
