Kedah Menteri Besar Muhammad Sanusi Md Nor said he has fulfilled his duty to follow God’s commands by banning gambling activities.

Commenting on the Alor Setar High Court decision that allowed a judicial review application to quash the state government’s ban on licensed gambling, he said those involved will have to answer to God.

“I have fulfilled my role and taken a stance in line with God’s commands. Those involved will answer to God. They think they can escape in this world, but not in the afterlife.

“I have done what is within my power. I have implemented God’s command upon me. Every human is sent to the world with the responsibility of being a caliph,” he said as reported by Berita Harian Online in Alor Setar yesterday.

Regarding the High Court’s decision to allow the judicial review application, Sanusi said the Kedah state legal adviser’s office filed a notice of appeal to the Court of Appeal on June 24.

They have also applied for a stay of execution on the ban reversal.

The gambling ban policy remains in force in the state until a new decision is made, he added.

On Nov 14, 2021, Sanusi announced that his state government would no longer approve gambling licences and limit alcohol sales on all premises, especially in rural areas.

On Dec 31, 2022, the licences for all gambling and lottery premises across Kedah expired, causing the outlets to cease operations.
