PETALING JAYA: Selangor Umno has returned all of its 75 village community management council or village head positions to the state government, says its chairman Megat Zulkarnain Omardin.

Megat said the party would shift its focus towards appointing chairmen for the Madani village communities, set to be established in every village across the state under the rural and regional development ministry.

He said the list of candidates for the positions had been submitted to him through the division chiefs, with appointment letters scheduled for issuance after Hari Raya Aidilfitri.

“I have received and submitted these nominations (from the division chiefs) to the ministry, and we have obtained approval,” he was quoted as saying by Utusan Malaysia.

“Following the festivities, I will convene a meeting with all the chairmen and secretaries, totalling 746 individuals, to hand over their appointment letters, witnessed by the division chiefs.”

However, the number of Madani village community chairman positions to be filled remains unspecified.

In January this year, Selangor Umno said it had decided to return its quota of 20 local council members to the state government.

Megat, who made the announcement, said the quota of 20 positions allocated to Umno was just 7% of the 288 positions in Selangor’s 12 local councils.

Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi later confirmed the decision, saying one of the reasons for the rejection was because some Umno division leaders could not be appointed as local council members.

Umno and Pakatan Harapan joined forces in Selangor following the formation of the federal unity government, a cooperation that saw them win 34 out of 56 seats in the state assembly election last year.

Umno, which won Dusun Tua and Sungai Tawar, was allocated one executive council seat, returning them to the state administration for the first time since its defeat in the 2008 general election.
