Kuala Kubu Baharu by-election: “No discussions on candidate yet,” says Anwar
PAKATAN Harapan (PH) has yet to hold any discussions about the ruling coalition’s candidate for the forthcoming Kuala Kubu Baharu by-election, said its chairman Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.
Speaking to reporters, the prime minister said he has not yet discussed the issue of the PH candidate with anyone so far.
“I came here (Masjid Bandar Utama Batang Kali) for Friday prayers and (to celebrate) Eid. I have not discussed the matter with anyone yet,” he was reported as saying.
The by-election for the Selangor state seat follows the death of its three-term assemblyman, DAP’s Lee Kee Hiong, who passed away on March 21 after a battle with cancer.
Lee first won her seat in 2013 after defeating MCA’s Ooi Hui Wen with a 1,702-vote majority. She defended it in 2018 with a 7,134-vote majority over MCA’s Wong Koon Mun.
During the state election last year, Lee again retained the seat for DAP with a 4,119-vote majority, fending off Gerakan’s Henry Teoh.
Election Commission (EC) chairman Tan Sri Abdul Ghani Salleh previously announced that nomination day will be on April 27, while early voting would be on May 7.
Polling day, meanwhile, has been set for May 11.
Kuala Kubu Baharu has a mixed electorate comprising 50% Malay, 30% Chinese and 18% Indian voters.
There are a total of 40,226 registered voters in the Kuala Kubu Baharu constituency, of which 39,363 are regular voters, 238 armed forces and spouses while 625 are police personnel and spouses.
The EC will assign 750 officers to manage the by-election.
There will be 18 polling centres with 74 channels, while two voting centres will be prepared for the early voting process. – April 12, 2024
That's probably telegraphing that the candidate party is up for grabs.
