CAAM reminds pilots to comply with air traffic clearances
The regulator says it has received complaints of non-compliance which it warns could lead to serious accidents.
PETALING JAYA: Pilots have been told to adhere strictly to clearances by air traffic controllers (ATC) during departures and arrivals at airports by the Civil Aviation Authority of Malaysia (CAAM) following complaints of non-compliance.
The aviation regulator did not specify the number of complaints or the airports and airlines involved but said these violations have occurred at various airports across the country.
“These incidents have the potential to lead to serious incidents or accidents if not addressed promptly.
“Adherence to ATC clearances is crucial at all airports, it is particularly critical at airports with simultaneous departure and arrival procedures, such as Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA), which operates under high-density conditions,” CAAM CEO Norazman Mahmud said in a safety advisory sighted by FMT.
He reminded pilots to ensure that they fully understand and comply with the standard instrument departure and arrival routes and other clearances issued by ATC, adding that it is their duty to verify the availability of these requirements.
“Strict compliance with these clearances is essential to ensure the safe, efficient and orderly flow of air traffic,” he said.
Any deviation from these clearances is only permitted in emergencies or in response to a traffic alert and collision avoidance advisory.
Norazman also reminded air traffic controllers to do their bit to ensure that all communications with pilots are clear, concise and unambiguous.
“This includes providing timely and accurate instructions, ensuring that read-backs are correctly received, and promptly addressing any misunderstandings or clarifications needed,” he said.
Read-backs is a procedure whereby the receiving station repeats a received message to the transmitting station for confirmation.
“Controllers should also be vigilant in monitoring aircraft adherence to clearances and promptly intervene if deviations are detected,” he said.

I'm deeply ashamed to read of this. Adhering to ATC instructions in Controlled Airspace is fundamental to safe flying and required qualities of a highly trained and disciplined pilot. WTF!
In the post COVID era, there have been Air Traffic and Runway conflict incidents and near tragedies in many countries, not limited to any particular country or airline .
