Gerakan chief confirms PN didn't allocate campaign funds for candidates
STATE POLLS | Gerakan president Dominic Lau has confirmed that the Perikatan Nasional headquarters did not allocate any funds to its candidates for the six-state elections.
Nor did they provide flags and campaign materials, resulting in them having to use the leftovers from last year's general election.
Lau (above) told Malaysiakini last night that due to the freezing of the Bersatu's bank accounts by the government, PN candidates in the state elections are self-funding their campaigns.
"On our side, Gerakan can only help by assisting them (the candidates) in paying the deposit, but everything else is self-funding,” he added.
Lau, who is the candidate for the Bayan Lepas seat in Penang, said that as the party president, he is also self-funding his campaign.
"It's difficult for us to find sponsors... Many of the hats, flags, and other items were left over from the 15th general election, and all our candidates are using them."
Lau clarified that these flags and campaign materials are not recycled and reused, but rather leftovers from the previous election, now put to use.
After GE15 in November last year, PN faced allegations regarding the questionable source of election funds.
The MACC subsequently launched an investigation and froze Bersatu's accounts in January this year, followed by sealing the accounts on April 11.
Last Saturday (July 29), PN chairperson Muhyiddin Yassin said that since the authorities have already frozen their accounts, there is no need for the opposition to question PN's campaign funds as they are mostly from public donations.
