Syed Saddiq says don’t blame young voters for their choices in state elections

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 28 — Malaysian United Democratic Alliance (Muda) president Syed Saddiq Abdul Rahman has called on Malaysians to refrain from blaming young voters for their choices and voting preferences.
He said that young voters should be encouraged to engage in meaningful conversations to understand their concerns and aspirations.
“Our position is to be their voice of change, not to reprimand them when the results don’t align with our expectations,” he posted on X, previously known as Twitter.
Syed Saddiq also lauded that the Undi18 policy is a nonpartisan one that transcends party lines.
“This policy underscores the inherent right of our youth to vote, a fundamental aspect to exercise their democratic rights,” he said.
The Muar MP also pointed out that the decision to implement Undi18 was made collectively, with unanimous support from all parliamentary parties.
“This underscores the cross-party consensus on the significance of empowering our youth through the electoral process.
“It’s a testament to the commitment of our democracy to reflect and serve the interests of all Malaysians,” he said.
He added that Malaysians should reflect on whether they would consider Undi18 a success if it resulted in votes for Muda or Pakatan Harapan.
“If the answer is yes, it is worth considering whether our motivations are truly centred on reform or rather driven by self-interest,” he said.
Muda performed poorly in the six-state elections on August 12, with all 19 of its candidates failing to gain one-eighth or 12.5 per cent of the votes in their respective constituencies.
