Drop Najib’s IPIC charges if ‘leaked’ is real, Zahid tells AGC

Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi says he has full confidence in the credibility of the attorney-general’s chambers.

Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said if the leaked memo is genuine, then the AGC should ‘review all the charges that have been thrown at Najib Razak’.

KUALA LUMPUR: The attorney-general’s chambers (AGC) must review Najib Razak’s charges following a purported leaked internal memo suggesting that it drop a 1MDB case involving the former prime minister, says Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.

When asked if Umno will push the AGC to clarify whether the leaked memo is genuine, the Umno president said it should “review all the charges that have been thrown at Najib”.

“If the memo is genuine, I am confident the AGC will immediately drop the charges,” Zahid said.

“We have full confidence in the AGC’s credibility and capability to review (the charges) and do something positive so that Najib will truly be given justice.”

Zahid, the deputy prime minister, was speaking to reporters during the Jualan Desa Madani programme at Menara Mara here.

In October 2018, Najib and former Treasury secretary-general Irwan Serigar Abdullah were charged with six counts of criminal breach of trust (CBT) involving RM6.6 billion worth of government funds, which allegedly included payments to Abu Dhabi-owned International Petroleum Investment Company (IPIC).

The alleged 12-page memo said an evaluation found that the available evidence in the case was “grossly insufficient to prove a prima facie case for the six charges, let alone to secure a conviction beyond reasonable doubt”.

It was purportedly sent to then attorney-general Tommy Thomas by the lead prosecutor in the case, Jamil Airpin, in September 2019.

The AGC has since said it was investigating the leak of the document but did not confirm its authenticity.
