Dr M was misquoted, retract your statement, Tengku Zafrul told

An aide says Dr Mahathir Mohamad actually said there are investors willing to invest RM500 million in Langkawi, not RM500 billion.

Yesterday, investment, trade and industry minister Tengku Zafrul Aziz (right) said the full red carpet treatment will be given if Dr Mahathir Mohamad’s claim on interested investors in Langkawi was true.

PETALING JAYA: An aide to Dr Mahathir Mohamad says a news outlet had misquoted the former prime minister after it reported him as claiming there are investors willing to invest RM500 billion in Langkawi.

Malek Redzuan, a special officer to Mahathir, said Sinar Harian has since corrected its report, now quoting the ex-Langkawi MP as saying that the investors are willing to invest some RM500 million in the island.

He urged investment, trade and industry minister Tengku Zafrul Aziz to retract a statement he made yesterday ridiculing Mahathir.

“Greetings, Tengku Zafrul. Sinar Harian has corrected it to RM500 million, not billion. When will you retract your statement and apologise?” he said in a Twitter post.

Tengku Zafrul had published a video in response to the erroneous Sinar Harian article, saying the full red carpet treatment will be given if it is true there are investors willing to invest RM500 billion in Langkawi.

The minister said no investment of as much as RM500 billion had ever been approved throughout Malaysia’s history, including during Mahathir’s two stints as prime minister. The highest was a total of RM309 billion of investments throughout the country in one year.

On Saturday, Mahathir claimed that he met a few people who had been interested in investing RM500 million in Langkawi.

However, they ended up heading to Indonesia, Vietnam and the Philippines instead because no minister was willing to meet them, the former prime minister alleged.

  1. What was not captured in this report was the minister's very clever retort - that he (Tengku Zafrul) is not the old baboon's press secretary. As MITI Minister it is not his (Tengku Zafrul's) job to rectify reports which misquoted the old man.
