Why praise duo for reporting Umno’s no-contest motion, Puad asks KJ
Puad Zarkashi called out Khairy Jamaluddin for praising the two Umno members who filed the report with the Registrar of Societies against the party.
PETALING JAYA: Umno Supreme Council member Puad Zarkashi has questioned Khairy Jamaluddin for praising the two Umno members who lodged a report with the Registrar of Societies (RoS) asking for an investigation into a possible breach of the party’s constitution regarding the no-contest motion for its top two posts.
“Were they being brave or were they being used?,” Puad said in a Facebook post.
“By right, it should be the top officials making such complaints. Don’t use your subordinates, let alone former officers. Is it sane?”
However, Puad did not specify whose former officers he was referring to.
During the Umno general assembly on Jan 13, a delegate from the Rembau division, Shukri Shamsudin, proposed a motion not to contest the posts of president and deputy president in the upcoming party elections, which must be held by May 19.
The motion was then tabled the following day and was passed when a majority of the delegates supported it with a show of hands.
Yesterday, Terengganu Umno member Aizat Fikri Nasir and Negeri Sembilan Umno member Fiqri Firdaus sent a letter to the RoS claiming that the tabling of the no-contest motion had breached Article 10 of the party’s constitution.
In their letter to RoS, they said that such a motion has to be tabled 14 days before the assembly, or seven days if it’s tabled by the Supreme Council.
They added that while such a motion could be tabled on the day of the assembly itself if the Supreme Council explains it as an urgent matter and one that is related to public interest, there had been no discussion about the motion with grassroots members and no explanation provided by the Supreme Council.
In an Instagram story, Khairy, a former Umno Youth chief, hailed the duo for lodging the complaint and said he was confident RoS would review their application properly.
“Well done guys, there are still some brave and sane people in Umno,” he said.
