PETALING JAYA: The Yang di-Pertuan Agong Sultan Abdullah Sultan Ahmad Shah and Raja Permaisuri Agong Tunku Azizah Aminah Maimunah Iskandariah extended their Chinese New Year greetings to Malaysians ushering in the Year of the Rabbit.

Their wishes were conveyed via Istana Negara’s official Facebook page today.

“It is hoped that the festivities will continue to foster and strengthen unity and tolerance among the various races and religions in Malaysia.”

Similarly, the Sultan of Selangor Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah and the Tengku Permaisuri of Selangor Tengku Permaisuri Norashikin said the celebration will continue to be an important element in strengthening unity and harmony among the various races in Malaysia.

The festivities, they added, should be celebrated in an atmosphere of goodwill, full of tolerance and mutual respect.

“Hopefully this year will bring prosperity, joy and happiness to all of us,” they said.

Meanwhile, several politicians also wished Malaysians happy Chinese New Year.

DAP stalwart Lim Kit Siang called on Malaysians to restore the “national compass from which the country has deviated”.

Failure to do so would see Malaysia descend “from a first-rate world-class plural nation to a second-rate mediocre country.”

“Malaysians, regardless of ethnicity, religion or region must not give up the Malaysian dream for the country to be a world-class nation in various fields of human endeavour,” he said in a statement.

Former senior minister Azmin Ali paid tribute to the Tiong Hua (Chinese) community for their contributions to the country’s economy which has led to development and prosperity.

“In a post-Covid-19 era, I am confident the Tiong Hua will continue to play a vital role in reviving the economy,” he said.

Chinese New Year is celebrated on Sunday and Monday.
