Suspect in helicopter ‘nasi ganja’ case to be charged on May 9

A Bell 505 landed at the Ipoh padang in July, while the movement control order was in force, and picked up 36 packets of “nasi ganja”.

PETALING JAYA: The suspect in the case of a helicopter which landed on a field in Ipoh to pick up orders of the city’s famous “nasi ganja” is to be charged at the Ipoh magistrate’s court on May 9.

Police said the investigation into the incident had been completed and the investigation papers sent to the public prosecutor’s office.

Bukit Aman’s director of criminal investigation department, Abdul Jalil Hassan, said police were instructed to charge the suspect under the Civil Aviation Regulations for failing to follow the submitted flight plan when landing an aircraft at a location other than the aerodrome specified.

If convicted, the suspect faces a penalty of up to three years’ jail, up to RM50,000 fine, or both.

Last July, a Bell 505 helicopter controversially landed at the Ipoh padang to pick up 36 packets of the city’s famous nasi kandar, dubbed “nasi ganja”, which had been ordered by customers in Kuala Lumpur.

Perak police chief Mior Faridalathrash Wahid has previously said a travel permit under the movement control order had been granted by police in Selangor to allow the helicopter to travel to Ipoh on a “maintenance round”.

The owner of the helicopter, Mohamed Raffe Chekku, later said the flight had gone by the book.
