Maszlee slated to join PKR after a year as an independent MP
Simpang Renggam MP Maszlee Malik is slated to join PKR, after over a year as an independent lawmaker.
A poster of an event in Simpang Renggam tomorrow featuring both Maszlee - wearing a PKR shirt - and PKR president Anwar Ibrahim is making the rounds.
A Simpang Renggam PKR source told Malaysiakini that Maszlee (above) will hand over 500 membership forms to Anwar tomorrow.
"PKR will open 20 new branches in Simpang Renggam," the source added.
Maszlee had joined politics as a Bersatu member but was sacked from the party during the schism between those aligned to Dr Mahathir Mohamad and those aligned to Muhyiddin Yassin.
While other Mahathir followers formed Pejuang, Maszlee decided to remain as an independent.
However, he has served as the Pakatan Harapan education committee chairperson.
Maszlee served as education minister while Harapan was in power.
He resigned in January 2020 after being asked to do so by Mahathir, who was prime minister at the time after courting controversy over issues such as the introduction of Jawi into the Standard 4 Bahasa Melayu curriculum.
