Audit donations raised to pay Najib’s fine, says Pua

DAP's former Damansara MP says this is to ensure that the funds collected are legitimate, and not laundered

DAP’s Tony Pua said the money could have been better used ‘to help ordinary Malaysians’.

PETALING JAYA: DAP’s Tony Pua has urged the authorities to audit the donations raised to help settle the RM50 million fine allowing former prime minister Najib Razak to serve the remainder of his corruption sentence under house arrest.

The former Damansara MP said an audit by Bank Negara Malaysia and the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission was vital to ensure the funds raised were legitimate and not laundered.

Earlier today, Umno said it had settled the RM50 million fine after collecting enough funds through a donation drive launched by the party in September.

Pua questioned Umno’s decision to settle the fine, arguing that the money could have been used to help ordinary Malaysians.

By choosing to allow Najib to go under house arrest, “Umno colours shine very brightly”, he added in a Facebook post.

Najib was jailed in August 2022 after the Federal Court upheld his conviction for abuse of power, criminal breach of trust and money laundering involving RM42 million in SRC International funds.

He was sentenced to 12 years’ jail and fined RM210 million.

In January 2024, then Yang di-Pertuan Agong Al-Sultan Abdullah Sultan Ahmad Shah halved Najib’s prison sentence and reduced his fine to RM50 million as part of a royal pardon.

In September this year, the current Yang di-Pertuan Agong, Sultan Ibrahim, granted Najib a further conditional pardon, allowing him to serve the remainder of his sentence under house arrest until Aug 23, 2028.

This was subject to Najib paying the RM50 million fine and complying with other stipulated conditions.
