Shuhaily yet to get letter of transfer to police force, says lawyer

Rafique Rashid Ali says home minister Saifuddin Nasution Ismail must clarify Shuhaily Zain’s status.

Formerly the head of Bukit Aman’s criminal investigation department, Shuhaily Zain was seconded to AKPS as its director-general on July 1 last year.
KUALA LUMPUR:
Shuhaily Zain has yet to receive an official letter from the home ministry confirming his transfer from the Malaysian Border Control and Protection Agency (AKPS) back to the police force, says his lawyer.

Rafique Rashid Ali said his client remained authorised to carry out his duties as the agency’s director-general until such an official directive was issued.

“To date, he has not been found guilty of any offence. He can therefore continue to carry out his duties as usual,” he said when met at the court complex here.

Rafique urged home minister Saifuddin Nasution Ismail to clarify Shuhaily’s status, saying the minister’s earlier announcement about the transfer had given rise to speculation.

“People are now questioning why the minister has announced one thing while what is happening on the ground suggests otherwise. Saifuddin should clarify this matter as it has given rise to speculation,” he said.

On Oct 21, Shuhaily pleaded not guilty at the Sepang magistrates’ court to a charge of assaulting two policemen at KLIA in September.

Last week, Saifuddin said that his ministry had decided to end Shuhaily’s secondment to AKPS and return him to the police force.

However, Shuhaily resumed his duties as AKPS director-general on Monday by chairing a commanders’ meeting after he was reported to be “on leave” the previous week.

Formerly the head of Bukit Aman’s criminal investigation department, he was seconded to AKPS as its director-general on July 1 last year.

Inspector-General of Police Khalid Ismail has said Shuhaily’s two-year term as AKPS director-general can only be cut short with the consent of the king.
