KOTA BHARU, Oct 8 — The Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) is estimating about five to seven episodes of heavy continuous downpour throughout throughout the North-east Monsoon period of 2025/2026, which is expected to begin early November till March 2026.
Its director-general, Dr Mohd Hisham Mohd Anip said the heavy rain was expected to have a main impact on Kelantan, Terengganu and Pahang during the monsoon’s initial phase between November to December 2025, while Johor, Sabah and Sarawak have the potential to experience episodes of continuous heavy rain during December and January 2026.
He pointed out that the development showed the importance of integrated readiness and not just depending on forecasts but to ensure logistics, communications, resources and swift action is managed well when disaster strikes.
“To strengthen weather monitoring, MET Malaysia currently manages 32 main meteorological stations, 382 automatic and conventional weather stations, eight upper air stations, 18 weather radar stations, six Wind Shear Detection System stations and three meteorological satellite receiver stations.
“This system network allows detection of heavy rain, thunderstorms and strong winds in real time and will strengthen the country’s readiness to face the possibility of disasters,” he told reporters after the 2025 National Climate Forum and Disaster Readiness here today. — Bernama
