KAMPAR, Oct 12 — A 52-year-old cement lorry driver, who later tested positive for drugs, led police on a dramatic 150km high-speed chase from Hulu Selangor to Seri Iskandar before being arrested in a bushy area near Universiti Teknologi Petronas (UTP) yesterday.

Kampar district police chief Supt Mohamad Nazri Daud said the incident began after police received information about a lorry that had refused to stop for an inspection on the northbound North-South Expressway.

As patrol cars from Tapah, Kampar, and Perak Tengah joined the pursuit, the situation escalated at the Gopeng Toll Plaza, Sinar Harian reported.

“The Kampar MPV team attempted to block the road using water barriers, but the lorry crashed through the toll gate and sped towards Kampar,” Mohamad Nazri was quoted as saying.

Driving erratically through Bandar Baru Kampar, the suspect acted aggressively, ramming into police vehicles and driving against traffic, endangering other road users.

Despite repeated orders to stop, the chase continued through Gopeng and Tanjung Tualang. Mohamad Nazri said officers were forced to fire a shot at the lorry's front tyre along Jalan Ipoh–Kampar to reduce the risk to the public.

Even with a burst tyre, the suspect continued to drive aggressively, ramming police vehicles that tried to intercept him.

“The suspect then made a U-turn in front of UTP, and with the help of the Perak Tengah District Police, the vehicle was finally stopped in a bushy area beside the university,” he said.

A preliminary urine test on the suspect returned positive for opiates (morphine). Checks also revealed the man has 13 previous criminal records, including 11 narcotics-related offences.

The case is now being investigated under Section 307 of the Penal Code for attempted murder.
