KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 15 — A bus driver was sentenced to 66 years in prison and 22 lashes after pleading guilty in the Sessions Court in Muar today to physically sexually abusing five female students at a school in Yong Peng, Batu Pahat, since last year.

Harian Metro reported that Judge Mohd Khairi Haron handed down the sentence to 53-year-old Sazali Sahlan, who faced 11 charges under Section 14(a) of the Sexual Offences Against Children Act (AKKSTKK) 2017.

After considering Sazali’s plea and mitigation, as well as submissions from the prosecution, the court imposed six years’ imprisonment and two lashes for each charge.

However, the court ruled that all prison sentences would run concurrently, except for the lashes, meaning Sazali will serve a total of six years in prison and receive 22 lashes.

The court also ordered him to undergo counselling while in custody and to be under police supervision for two years after completing his prison term.

According to the charges, the married man without kids sexually abused five 14-year-old female students while they were on the bus he drove.

The offences occurred on a parked bus at the bus stop along Jalan Yong Peng-Muar, Yong Peng, at 6:45pm, between late 2024 and mid-2025.

Section 14(a) of the AKKSTKK provides for imprisonment of up to 20 years and whipping for each charge if convicted.

Police received reports from one of the victims regarding the abuse, which took place while she was riding the bus. Investigations revealed that the offences had been ongoing since last year, with the latest incident occurring mid-2025.

All five victims reportedly witnessed the acts, which happened as they were returning to school together.

The prosecution was handled by Deputy Public Prosecutor Diyana Najihah Muhamed Fauzi, while Sazali was unrepresented in court.

  1. The trauma he caused the students will last far beyond 6nyears, probably psychologically scarred for life.
