KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 12 — Police have opened an investigation paper into the express bus accident that occurred yesterday morning, resulting in the death of one passenger.

Kajang Police Chief ACP Naazron Abdul Yusof said they received a report on the accident involving an express bus travelling from Boon Lay, Singapore, to Ipoh, Perak, at about 3.15 am.

He said the bus, driven by a 60-year-old Malaysian man, is believed to have lost control before veering into a ditch and crashing into a pole at KM 293 of the North-South Expressway, Kuala Lumpur-bound stretch, near Bangi.

“The total number of passengers, including the driver, was 29 people, comprising 24 Malaysians and five Singaporeans,” he said in a statement today.

He added that a 59-year-old Malaysian man, who worked in the construction sector in Singapore and was seated at the front seat of the vehicle, died at the scene from severe head injuries, while 28 others, including the driver and backup drivers, sustained injuries.

He said the injured victims are currently receiving treatment at Hospital Sultan Idris Shah Serdang, Hospital Tengku Permaisuri Norashikin Kajang, Hospital Putrajaya, Hospital Cyberjaya, and Hospital Tuanku Ja’afar Seremban.

“The case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for reckless driving causing death, which carries a penalty of five to 10 years’ imprisonment, a fine not exceeding RM50,000, and disqualification from holding a driving licence for at least five years if convicted,” he said.

Naazron urged anyone with information about the incident to contact the nearest police station or Kajang District Police Traffic Investigation Officer Insp Mohd Raziman Rasid at 019-4565502. — Bernama
