KUALA LUMPUR — The Malaysian Medical Association (MMA) is urging the public to remain calm but vigilant amid a sharp increase in Influenza A and B cases nationwide, saying the situation can be managed with proper preventive measures.

The call for calm comes as Malaysia reported a significant surge in influenza clusters, jumping from 14 in the previous week to 97 in Epidemiological Week 40/2025.

Most of these clusters are concentrated in schools and educational institutions, prompting Majlis Amanah Rakyat (MARA) to direct 34 of its boarding schools to switch to home-based learning.

MMA president Datuk Dr Thirunavukarasu Rajoo said that while the rise in clusters is being closely monitored by the Ministry of Health, it is not unusual for the current season.

He stressed that good hygiene remains the best defence.

“Wash hands frequently, cover coughs and sneezes, and wear a mask if feeling unwell or in crowded areas,” he said in a statement.

Dr Thirunavukarasu also urged the public to seek prompt medical attention for persistent high fever, severe cough, difficulty breathing, or any symptoms that do not improve after a few days, as early treatment can reduce the risk of complications.

He also issued a special caution for high-risk groups — including young children, the elderly, pregnant women, and those with chronic illnesses — advising them to be particularly careful and consider getting vaccinated.

“With vigilance and responsible action, we can manage the situation effectively and protect the health of our communities,” he said.
