Tengku Zafrul denies plans to contest Ampang seat after joining PKR

INVESTMENT, Trade and Industry Minister Datuk Seri Tengku Zafrul Abdul Aziz has dismissed speculation that he plans to contest the Ampang parliamentary seat under PKR in the GE16.

Tengku Zafrul, who joined PKR in August as a member of its Ampang division, said his move into the party was not driven by political ambition but by a desire to contribute to PKR’s economic and policy agenda.

“There is no agreement with the party president that I will contest in GE16,” he told Utusan Malaysia, clarifying that support from local members does not guarantee him a candidacy.

In August, Ampang MP Rodziah Ismail said she had no detailed information about Tengku Zafrul’s membership in PKR, stressing that she remains the sitting MP for the constituency.

At that time, PKR secretary-general Fuziah Salleh confirmed that Tengku Zafrul’s membership was approved by the party’s central leadership council on July 26.

Before joining PKR, Tengku Zafrul resigned from UMNO in May 2025 after serving on its Supreme Council and as Selangor UMNO treasurer. His second and final term as senator ends later this year, which will require him to vacate his Cabinet position unless reappointed. —Oct 5, 2025
