If somebody contacted you to say that they have caught you on video in bed with a man, you might panic, but that is because you are not Rafizi Ramli. If you are Rafizi Ramli, you might decide to release a press statement to tell the world about it.
That is exactly what the former economy minister did after he received an email demanding US$100,000 to prevent the release of a sex video allegedly showing him with a man. Not only did Rafizi immediately inform the public, he also called his colleague Wong Chen—only to learn that the Subang MP, too, had been targeted in the same way.
Coincidentally, Wong Chen confirmed that he had also received a blackmail attempt involving a similar AI-generated pornographic video. He told FMT that a police report was promptly lodged and that he would issue a full statement after meeting investigators on Monday.
Rafizi revealed that the threatening email he received contained a blurry screenshot from the alleged video and a QR code for transferring the ransom. He dismissed the image as doctored, saying his face had been superimposed.
"I urge the public to remain vigilant against any form of fraud or threats via the internet. The spread of such fabricated content not only damages the dignity of individuals but also poses a threat to the safety of society as a whole," ” said Rafizi, who previously served as PKR deputy president.
He added that the real purpose of the email may have been to hack into his devices. Over the past nine months, he said, he had received multiple hacking alerts from Apple regarding “mercenary spyware” attacks linked to his political activities—including warnings about spyware such as Pegasus, a tool developed by Israeli firm NSO Group.
The threats come in the wake of a disturbing personal attack: last month, Rafizi’s 12-year-old son was stabbed with a syringe at a shopping mall in Putrajaya. While doctors ruled out immediate poisoning, his son must undergo six months of testing for potential infections like HIV and hepatitis. Rafizi said he believes the incident was linked to his meetings with whistleblowers over sensitive cases.
Meanwhile, another PKR parliamentarian has also been caught up in the cyber blackmail wave. Sungai Petani MP Mohammed Taufiq Johari said he received a similar email on Sept 12, demanding US$100,000 to suppress a fake pornographic video generated with AI.
“The email contained a pornographic video featuring my image, which had been manipulated using AI technology with the intention of tarnishing my dignity and integrity. I consider this a very serious cybercrime,” Taufiq said in a Facebook post.
He has since lodged reports with both the police and the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC), urging authorities to investigate the misuse of AI in such fabrications.
“I urge the public to remain vigilant against fraud and threats via the internet. This kind of fabricated content not only damages the dignity of individuals but also poses a threat to society as a whole,” he said.
With three PKR MPs now openly acknowledging they have been targeted by the same blackmail tactic, the wave of AI-driven smear campaigns has raised fresh concerns about the intersection of politics, cybercrime, and digital security in Malaysia.
