This appears to be a rejection of PN chairman Muhyiddin Yassin, who is 78 and was nominated by Bersatu as its GE16 prime minister candidate last week

PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang said leaders under 70 are stronger and more able to potentially take on the role of prime minister.

ALOR SETAR: PAS wants Perikatan Nasional’s prime minister candidate for the next general election (GE16) to be a leader who is under 70 years old and physically healthy, says Abdul Hadi Awang.

The PAS president said he was himself not fit for the role due to his age and health, maintaining that a healthier leader who also had integrity should be nominated.

“People like me aren’t qualified anymore. We will choose someone who is healthy and under 70 years old to be our prime minister candidate. Let it be someone who is physically strong.

“I’m already turning 78 this year. Those under 70 are stronger and more capable for the job,” he said at a press conference at PAS’s 71st muktamar here.

Hadi’s remarks appear to be a rejection of PN chairman Muhyiddin Yassin, who is 78 and was nominated by Bersatu as its GE16 prime minister candidate last week.

Muhyiddin’s deputy, opposition leader Hamzah Zainudin, is 68 and has often been touted as a potential prime minister candidate for PN.

PAS moved a motion at its muktamar over the weekend to “lead PN and have a PAS prime minister candidate”.

Hadi nonetheless maintained that the PN Supreme Council will decide on its prime minister candidate for the polls.

He said its nominee should be a figure who leads collectively, and not as a “dictator”.

The seven-term Marang MP added that PAS had many qualified candidates but they often did not put themselves in the limelight as they consider the role as a very heavy responsibility.

Earlier, Muhyiddin said the PN Supreme Council will meet in about a week’s time to discuss its prime minister candidate for GE16.

The Bersatu president said they will take an “open-hearted approach” and that all component parties will abide by the top leadership’s choice if a majority decision is reached in that meeting.
