PETALING JAYA, Sept 11 — Titiwangsa MP Datuk Seri Johari Ghani has reportedly said that developers involved in the Kampung Sungai Baru redevelopment should ensure affordable homes are made available for the Malay community there.
He said the land had originally been granted to the Malays by the Selangor sultan during the colonial period and therefore any redevelopment must prioritise their interests, Free Malaysia Today reported.
“Since the matter has progressed and likely cannot be reversed, the developers must take the responsibility of ensuring that the Malays will be able to afford the homes to be built there,” he was quoted as saying.
“Historically, this land belongs to the Malays so only they should be allowed to purchase what is built,” he reportedly said.
Johari, who is also minister of plantation and commodities, reportedly went on to criticise the use of legal action to remove 14 families, calling the move irresponsible.
Tensions flared this morning after Dang Wangi police chief Sulizmie Affendy Sulaiman was injured in the head by a rock thrown by an unidentified individual while overseeing a court-ordered eviction operation in Kampung Sungai Baru.
Police confirmed that three individuals were detained following the scuffle.
