PUTRAJAYA, Sept 10 — The Cabinet has agreed in principle to separate the roles of attorney general and public prosecutor, said government spokesperson Datuk Fahmi Fadzil today.

He said the decision was made after the Cabinet reviewed the final report and roadmap prepared by the Special Task Force on Comparative Studies, chaired by Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Law and Institutional Reform) Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said.

“The Cabinet today made a historic decision as the government agreed in principle to separate the roles of attorney general and public prosecutor,” Fahmi said during his weekly post-Cabinet press conference.

He said Azalina had presented several models to the Cabinet this morning.

“After thorough consideration, the Cabinet decided to implement a full separation, with both positions to be established independently and equally under the Federal Constitution,” he added.
