PAS MUKTAMAR | PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang today panned individuals who offer themselves up for leadership positions, inferring that doing so is un-Islamic.

Addressing delegates at PAS’ 71st muktamar in Kedah, he quoted a story from the time Prophet Muhammad advised his companions against asking for positions.

According to Hadi, the prophet was approached by one of his companions from Yemen asking to be appointed as a leader.

“The prophet told him, ‘In the name of Allah, I will not appoint anyone who asks for a position out of greed, ’” he said.

Adding further, the Marang MP said Muslim leaders should not ask for positions because it is a responsibility for which they would be held accountable in the hereafter.

Hadi told the delegates that the prophet had also warned a companion that those asking for positions would not receive help from Allah.

“If you ask for positions, God will abandon you. You will be a leader, but you cannot solve problems.

“Making all sorts of promises such as going to reduce the price of fuel, (abolish) PTPTN, all sorts of promises, but end up not being able to meet any.

“That is the burden one would have on his or her head for asking for positions. So, do not ask,” he said, in an apparent jibe at Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim.

In another reference to the prophet’s saying, Hadi said Allah will choose leaders, and the chosen will attain that position when the time comes.
