Azmin: Anwar a hypocrite on graft, I once sinned with him

Bersatu secretary-general Azmin Ali has taken aim at Anwar Ibrahim, accusing the prime minister of hypocrisy over corruption and conceding that he once “sinned” alongside him.

Speaking at Bersatu’s 8th annual general meeting in Shah Alam, he also accused Anwar of slighting Bersatu president Muhyiddin Yassin and his predecessor, Dr Mahathir Mohamad, by claiming they only raised issues of poverty and Malay interests after losing power.

The former PKR deputy president said Anwar’s recent speeches, including those delivered to civil servants and at official functions, had repeatedly insulted Bersatu’s leadership and Mahathir.

In a retort, Azmin accused Anwar of speaking out against corruption and abuse of power only when he was not in power.

“Anwar, look at yourself in the mirror first. You only spoke about corruption when you fell. You only talked about theft when you were down. When you were in government, you stayed silent and did nothing,” Azmin said.

He went on to acknowledge his own complicity during their time together in government.

“I sat beside him before. I also sinned with him then,” he admitted, before contrasting Anwar’s silence with Muhyiddin, whom he praised for speaking out against corrupt leaders at great personal cost when he was the deputy prime minister and Umno deputy president.

Azmin however said he has since repented.

The Hulu Kelang assemblyperson argued that Bersatu, under Muhyiddin’s leadership, had demonstrated resilience and principles in the face of crises, unlike what he described as the opportunism of Anwar and Pakatan Harapan.

“If you want profit, then join PKR or Harapan. Not only will you gain profit, but you’ll also be welcomed by those over there. But we have chosen to take a very big risk by being in Bersatu, because we stand firmly on clear principles,” Azmin added.

A gentleman and a wolf

The former Selangor menteri besar said that Muhyiddin was tested not only when Malaysia and the world were hit by a health crisis, but also by the economic crisis that followed.

Yet, despite the calamities, Azmin said Muhyiddin remained calm, steady, never flustered, and focused on saving people’s lives, the nation’s economy, and the people’s livelihoods.

“Balancing lives and prosperity is no easy task. But the president of Bersatu succeeded in uplifting and saving Malaysia and its people as a whole.

“That is why, ladies and gentlemen, delegates, they are envious of us. They don’t want Bersatu to stay united.

“They want Bersatu to break apart, when they know Bersatu is not just about the name but also about its practice. That is why our president appears calm, very calm, very much a gentleman.

“But remember: never assume still waters have no crocodiles. Yet he is not a crocodile. He is a wolf. Don’t take him lightly,” Azmin added to applause and cheers from delegates.
