Border Control and Protection Agency director-general Shuhaily Zain has confirmed that 18 of the 27 suspects MACC recently arrested over alleged involvement in a counter-setting syndicate were from his agency.

He told a press conference today that the officers were part of the agency’s teams stationed at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport 1 and 2, and vowed to extend their cooperation to the graftbusters.

"We will give our full cooperation to the MACC, and I have contacted MACC chief commissioner Azam Baki about the matter.

"Those detained have been remanded," he was quoted as saying by The Star.

It was reported that MACC arrested 27 people on Tuesday on suspicion of being involved in a counter-setting syndicate that allowed foreigners to enter Malaysia without following proper procedures.

According to sources, the suspects - 19 men and eight women aged between their 20s and 50s - were nabbed in operations across Selangor, Malacca, Kuala Lumpur and Negeri Sembilan yesterday.

"The detained suspects are believed to have been involved in the counter-setting syndicate, where they were suspected of giving and receiving bribes in exchange for facilitating the entry of foreign nationals into the country without going through the stipulated procedures.

"As a result of the operation, MACC also seized more than RM200,000 in cash, several jewellery items, gold bars, cars, motorcycles, handbags, watches and telecommunications devices," the source said.
