Summary

  • MCA veep calls on Dr Akmal Saleh to do some self-reflection to understand why non-Malays strongly dislike him.

  • Tan Teik Cheng claims the Umno Youth chief has repeatedly triggered discontent among the non-Malay community.

  • Akmal’s attitude damages the relationship between BN parties and undermines the coalition’s efforts to gain non-Malay support, he adds.

A MCA vice-president has hit back at Umno Youth chief Dr Akmal Saleh, who threatened to sue a Johor MCA leader for referring to him with a disparaging nickname.

Tan Teik Cheng urged Akmal to reflect on why non-Malays held such a deeply negative view of him.

"Akmal’s words and actions have repeatedly triggered discontent among the non-Malay community.

"This is not just the personal opinion of (Johor MCA deputy publicity chief) Law Yiak Kwang or any MCA member - it reflects the broader perception of non-Malays towards him.

"Akmal’s attitude not only damages the relationship between BN component parties but also undermines BN’s efforts to gain support from the non-Malay community," Tan (above) said in a statement today.

‘Crazy Malay’

This came after the Umno Youth chief saw red over Law’s Facebook posts using the phrase "癫马", which was translated as "crazy Malay" or “crazy horse”.

Akmal said this was either an attack on himself or an insult to Malays as a whole.

Law, however, clarified that "癫马" was a common phrase on social media that meant - "Akmal who always acts irrationally".

The Chinese character "马" - pronounced mā - on its own means "horse".

However, the character can also be used phonetically to represent the “ma" sound when transliterating from other languages, including the Chinese words for Malaysia, Malays, ex-PM Dr Mahathir Mohamad, and Akmal.
