'Cowards': KJ flays govt for 'abusing might', suspending Machang MP

Former Umno youth chief Khairy Jamaluddin has taken a swipe at government MPs after the Dewan Rakyat voted to suspend Machang MP Wan Ahmad Fayhsal Wan Ahmad Kamal.

“Cowards. You make fun of him saying he is ‘jargon’, ‘clueless’. In the end, you abuse your legislative might to throw him out for six months,” he chided on Instagram yesterday.

He said it was obvious Wan Fayhsal had irritated the government by being outspoken and criticising the sale of Malaysia Airports Holdings Berhad (MAHB) shares to a Blackrock-linked company.

“Clearly, he’s getting to you,” the former health minister rebuked.

“Blackrock stooges. Hope the Zionist money is worth it.”

Yesterday, the august house voted to suspend the Bersatu Youth chief with 110 MPs in favour, 63 against, and three abstaining. Another 46 MPs were absent.

The decision came after Wan Fayhsal cited an anonymous letter during parliamentary debates on July 1 that purportedly maligned civil servants using unverified information.

The motion against him stated: “The Machang MP issued a statement and allegation that is serious and stirs anti-government sentiments.

“Therefore, it is agreed that the Machang MP should be suspended from the meeting and select committees for six months from the date this motion is approved.”

Wan Fayhsal quoted a letter that named an officer in the Employees Provident Fund (EPF) as the purported “mastermind” of the plan to privatise MAHB and portrayed the officer in a negative light.

Procedures not followed

Meanwhile, former minister Zaid Ibrahim shared Khairy’s sentiments.

Taking to X, he pointed out that no other Parliament in the world would suspend an MP for reading an anonymous letter without conducting a thorough investigation.

“In other Parliaments, the conduct of the MP being investigated for bringing Parliament into disrepute requires a full investigation.

“After that, it would be submitted to the standards committee, which would recommend if any punishment needs to be meted. If so, what sort of punishment is appropriate,” he said.

Zaid then sarcastically said the Madani Parliament required no such procedures.

He also chided the “lofty speech” by Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Law and Institutional Reform) Azalina Othman Said which was given after Wan Fayhsal’s suspension.

“A speech that made allegations without proof. Wan Fayhsal (was said to have) told lies, and therefore, he abused his position.

“We have (no choice but) to believe the reform minister (Azalina),” he said.

Zaid also reminded government MPs against being arrogant just because they have parliamentary majority.

“Use your majority wisely, for it might not last long.

“I wish we were more civil and respectful of the MPs. Whatever allegations we make of them, we must have proof.

“Whatever punishment we impose, we must also consider the rakyat they represent.”

Don’t tarnish Parliament

Meanwhile, Umno supreme council member Puad Zarkashi highlighted that the suspension of MPs was not a new matter.

He said many have been subjected to similar actions before this.

He also opined that Wan Fayhsal should have been suspended for a year.

“Wan Fayhsal should have been suspended for a year as a lesson to all MPs. Don’t tarnish the dignity of Parliament just to be populist,” he said on social media today.

Sharing a similar sentiment was Pakatan Harapan Youth information chief Ammar Atan, who said the suspension was because Wan Fayhsal violated parliamentary ethics.

He pointed out that this was not the first time Perikatan Nasional MPs had violated parliamentary ethics and advised PN chairperson Muhyiddin Yassin to hold programmes to educate them.

“Last February, Wan Saiful Wan Jan, who is a member of Bersatu’s supreme council, was almost suspended from Parliament for six months for alleging, without proof, that Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim is a leader who abuses his power.

“At last, Wan Saiful had to apologise to the prime minister and the Yang di-Pertuan Agong.

“We advise Muhyiddin and Bersatu to conduct special programmes to educate its MPs to have integrity and avoid slandering during debates in the Dewan Rakyat.
