Don't jump the gun on Palestine refugee issue, says minister
Ministers who have commented on the matter should also be aware of the protocol involved and wait for an announcement from the federal government

A MINISTER has urged those involved to wait for a decision from the federal government before commenting on the possibility of Malaysia accepting refugees from Palestine.
Sarawak Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts minister, Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah said there was no reason to jump the gun as there has been no decision yet.
"There are non-governmental organisations (NGO) already commenting ... Who are you?
"Once there has been a decision by the federal government, then you can give your views," he said as reported by Borneo Post.
He said ministers who have commented on the matter should also be aware of the protocol involved and wait for an announcement from the federal government.
"There is no need to comment on what the NGOs say," he said.
Meanwhile, GPS Youth and opposition party, PBK in Sarawak said there was no reason for Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi to apologise nor retract his statement on rejecting the idea of accepting Palestinian refugees to the state.
Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) Youth chief Miro Simuh said Sarawak and Sabah had autonomy over immigration, which included the right to control the entry of any foreigner into the state.
"PBB supports Nanta's statement on Sarawak's autonomous right to refuse entry to any foreigners considered a risk or threat to the peace, harmony and security in the state," Miro said as reported in the New Sarawak Tribune.
Miro is also the Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB) Youth chief.
This, said Miro, was stated in the Federal Constitution, Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63) and Immigration Act.
"Therefore, Sarawak has the right to refuse or reject the entry of any foreigners into the state even if the federal government allows such foreigners to enter Malaya," he said.
He said this in response to Umno Youth chief Muhamad Akmal Saleh who had reportedly demanded Nanta to issue an open apology and retract his statement on rejecting the idea of accepting Palestinian refugees to the state.
In backing Nanta, Parti Bumi Kenyalang (PBK) president Voon Lee Shan said Muhamad Akmal should in fact apologise for being insensitive to the rights of Sarawakians to protect their land.
He too pointed out that Sarawak has control over immigration matters and the Sarawak government should not allow foreigners, including Palestinians and Israelis who are facing the war now, to seek refuge in Sarawak.
"PBK supports Nanta’s stand because Sarawak belongs to Sarawakians.
“We have seen enough trouble in Borneo about foreigners and illegal immigrants coming here. They have caused lots of trouble for us.
“Be reminded that Sarawak is not a dumping ground for troublemakers,” he said as reported by Borneo Post.
Nanta, who is also the Works Minister, had earlier said that there were still many poor people in Sarawak who needed attention and care.
"Sarawak must prioritise socioeconomic development for its people.
“We are small…we cannot be burdened by refugees," he said.
Nanta, who is also Kapit MP, called on those who can afford to contribute financially to assist those suffering to purchase essential supplies.
“That would be safer and more meaningful for Sarawak.
“Let us help the victims in the best and safest way we can,” added the PBB secretary-general. - The Vibes, November 16, 2023
