IGP questions Sirul’s allegations of being the fall guy in Altantuya murder

INSPECTOR General of Police Tan Sri Razarudin Husain said allegations by Sirul Azhar Umar, who was convicted of murdering a Mongolian woman Altantuya Shaariibuu in 2006 that he was a black sheep were never brought up in court by Sirul nor by the other Special Action Unit (UTK) member Azilah Hadri who was also accused of the same offence.

He described Sirul’s statement in an exclusive interview with Aljazeera English 101 East on Friday (Nov 24) as having no merit, being baseless and just a wild statement that could cause speculation.

“He has been allowed to defend himself in line with the Constitution and laws in force in Malaysia. However, the allegations were never submitted to any court that tried him from the High Court to the Federal Court,” said the IGP.

The police chief also said Sirul has made no application to review his death sentence, though he could bring new evidence through his lawyer or himself and make a report to help the authorities open fresh investigations and take further actions.

“However, until now he has not made any application to review the death sentence imposed on him in line with the Death Penalty and Life Imprisonment Review Act (Temporary Jurisdiction of the Federal Court 2023 [Act 847] which gives a period of 90 days for any death penalty offender to make a review starting from Sept 12, 2023.”

In the sensational Al Jazeera interview, Sirul claimed that he was not responsible for Altantuya’s murder despite being found guilty by a court in Malaysia. He stated that he was a victim too and as a lower-level officer, he had to follow orders.

Sirul also made several wild allegations that have not been verified when the local media contacted those mentioned in the interview.

He said one of his lawyers paid him to state in a video that former premier Datuk Seri Najib Razak had nothing to do with the murder. – Nov 25, 2023
