Home minister Saifuddin Nasution Ismail urged caretaker Kedah menteri besar Sanusi Nor not to deflect queries on the alleged rare earth elements theft in the state.
ALOR SETAR: Home minister Saifuddin Nasution Ismail has linked caretaker Kedah menteri besar Sanusi Nor with a Chinese national allegedly involved in the extraction of rare earth elements (REE) in the state.
At a press conference at the Kedah PKR headquarters here today, Saifuddin produced a photograph of Sanusi with a man the minister identified as “So Loi Fat”, who he claimed was one of two skilled workers brought in by Kedah Menteri Besar Incorporated (Kedah MBI) to mine REE.
The minister also unveiled a letter purportedly signed by Kedah MBI CEO Sobri Osman.
“The letter clearly names the two Chinese nationals (including ‘So’). (Sanusi) must be responsible and answer the questions that arise.
“Don’t deflect to other issues. The ball is in your court to explain the issue from a governance perspective,” he said.
Two days ago, Saifuddin claimed that the theft of REE in Bukit Enggang, Sik, took place due to Sanusi’s incompetence in managing the Kedah state government.
Last night, Saifuddin pledged to reveal additional details on the matter, despite Sanusi sending him a legal notice over his REE claims.
The home minister said he was ready to address the matter in court.
Previously, the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) arrested Sobri and a female director of a company to assist in an investigation involving corruption amounting to more than RM13 million.
The pair have since been released.
MACC chief commissioner Azam Baki later said Sanusi would be among those called in by the anti-graft agency in its investigation into the case.
The graft buster has already summoned 10 Kedah state executive council members to assist in its investigation, Sanusi reportedly said.
