Ramasamy should count his blessings, says ex-DAP MP
Kasthuri Patto says the former Perai assemblyman was a nobody until he joined DAP and enjoyed many opportunities despite being a newcomer.
DAP central executive committee member Kasthuri Patto called P Ramasamy ‘an ingrate’ for the manner by which he left the party.
PETALING JAYA: Kasthuri Patto said P Ramasamy, who quit DAP yesterday, should “count his blessings” for the opportunities he was given by the party in his political career.
The former Batu Kawan MP from DAP said Ramasamy, who joined the party in 2005, had been given the chance to contest both the Perai state seat and the Batu Kawan parliamentary seat in the 2008 general election (GE12).
After winning in GE12, Ramasamy was made deputy chief minister II and remained in the post for three terms.
She said such an opportunity was handed to him despite him being a newcomer.
“He was a nobody in the political sphere when the party accepted his application to join DAP in 2005,” she said in a statement.
Kasthuri also attributed Ramasamy’s success in GE12 to the momentum propelled by Hindraf’s “Makkal Sakti” movement and the “people’s tsunami” which resulted in a significant change in five state governments – Selangor, Penang, Perak, Kedah and Terengganu. DAP was allied with PKR and PAS in 2008.
“He was made (Penang) deputy chief minister II and for 15 years enjoyed the power, privilege and the perks that came with the job and, most importantly, it was because of DAP.”
She went on to say that Ramasamy “enjoyed everything DAP had given” him and was now showing his true colours after being dropped as a candidate.
“You are an ingrate,” she said.
Ramasamy was among the seven former Penang assemblymen dropped as candidates for the Aug 12 state election.
Yesterday, Ramasamy announced that he quit DAP and claimed Penang DAP was carrying out a political purge to sideline those perceived to be supporting caretaker chief minister Chow Kon Yeow.
Ramasamy also expressed his disappointment with Loke Siew Fook, saying that the DAP secretary-general did not inform him of the decision to drop him beforehand.
Kasthuri went on to claim that Ramasamy had “sabotaged” her while she was serving as a Batu Kawan MP by “virtually blocking any means for me to obtain information about what was happening in (his constituency) Perai”.
She also claimed that she had been “harassed and tormented” by Ramasamy and his team.
