Fact-check: Post urging Muslims to ready parangs from 2019

A post alleging that a Putrajaya mosque official was calling on Muslims to have parangs ready to use against kafirs is making the rounds again on social media.

Checks by Malaysiakini found that the posting was from 2019 and had already been investigated by police.

The screenshot of the Facebook posting reads: “Muslims must have parang for slaughtering. As preparation. Who knows, if the kafirs want to become like sacrificial cows.”

A search found that the posting first went viral in August 2019, prompting investigations by police and the Islamic Development Department (Jakim).

A Free Malaysia Today article from Aug 19, 2019 states that police had arrested the man who is alleged to have made the posting.

Police said that the suspect - who also works for Jakim - claimed during initial investigations that his Facebook account had been hacked.

However, it is unclear if any action was taken pursuant to this.

Malaysiakini’s checks found that the individual is still employed with Jakim and still holds a position at a mosque in Putrajaya.

Malaysiakini has contacted the individual for comment.

Video claims S’gor closed 200 tahfiz

Meanwhile, in a separate case, a video is going viral alleging that more than 200 Islamic religious schools have been shut down in Selangor.

Selangor has been carrying out a whitelisting programme on Islamic schools in the state.

This programme began in 2019 following a decree by Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah to avoid a repeat of a 2018 tahfiz school fire, which claimed 23 lives and injured five others.

In June this year, then-Selangor Islamic affairs exco member Mohd Zawawi Ahmad Mughni denied that the programme was aimed at closing schools.

Instead, he said the programme was aimed at making the schools better and ensuring that it meets guidelines.
