Ex-MB's 'Umno bungkus lipat' remark tickles Muhyiddin


Former Pahang menteri besar Adnan Yaakob’s assessment of Umno’s political fortunes in the aftermath of the six state elections left a smile on Muhyiddin Yassin’s face.

In a video clip circulating on social media, the Perikatan Nasional chairperson registered surprise when Adnan remarked, “Umno pun dah bungkus, bungkus lipat (Umno is finished).”

And when a smiling Muhyiddin asked how this could happen, the 73-year-old former Umno leader replied: “Banyak cerita. (many reasons)”

Adnan met Muhyiddin outside the Kuala Lumpur High Court yesterday after the latter succeeded in quashing his four abuse of power charges linked to the Jana Wibawa programme.

In last Saturday’s polls, Umno was trounced in all states except Negeri Sembilan. It won 19 out of the 108 seats contested.

This was an emphatic reminder that PN, comprising Bersatu and PAS, has replaced Umno as the first choice for the majority of the Malay-Muslim electorate.

In last November’s general election, the nascent coalition also made significant gains at the expense of Umno.

Following the state polls debacle, calls have rung out within Umno for its president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi to step down and for the party to review its ties with DAP.

In June, former Umno Youth chief Khairy Jamaluddin also predicted the party would “bungkus” in the state election.

Khairy was axed from Umno during a purge against Zahid’s rivals.

However, in the recent state elections, Khairy campaigned for candidates from both sides.
