“Marriage of convenience to destabilise Anwar’s govt”

FORMER prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohammed seems to oscillate between political extremes.

Having recently mooted the idea of Malay Proclamation, he went on to talk about DAP’s subversion of the Federal Constitution by promoting multi-racialism.

He also criticised Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim for being a DAP puppet by virtue of the latter’s control of 40 seats in the Parliament.


The controversy had yet to die down when he met Perikatan Nasional (PN) chairman Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin to get the latter’s support for his Malay Proclamation.

Following the events of the infamous Sheraton Move, Mahathir and Muhyiddin had drifted apart but I suppose it was the impending state elections that have brought them back together.

Suffice to say, both Mahathir and Muhyiddin are political desperados who just cannot wait to topple Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim from power.

In fact, it is not a stretch to say that Mahathir will go to the extremes to destabilise the Anwar-led unity government, be it the Malay Proclamation, claiming that multiculturalism is an affront to the Federal Constitution, or even accusing DAP of having evil designs of subverting Malay hegemony.

While Mahathir and Muhyiddin have their differences, the idea of bringing down the legitimate government is clearly too enticing to be ignored.

I have said countless times that the Malay Proclamation is all about delegitimising Anwar’s government; it has nothing to do with fighting for the Malays.

Mahathir was the prime minister first for 22 years and later, 22 months, and therefore, he should have entertained the question as to why Malays are losing out to others in the country.

During this period, the ordinary Malays might not have benefited, but Mahathir’s family members and cronies had certainly ridden on the Malay wave to reap handsome economic and financial benefits.

Muhyiddin is far from being a saint as well and his government, formed after Sheraton Move, did nothing to assist the Malays.

Therefore, Muhyiddin should ask himself what he had done for his people when he was in power.

Presently, he is facing corruption and money laundering charges for allegations of diverting funds meant for the eradication of COVID-19 pandemic.

Mahathir, Muhyiddin and others are the hypocrites who say one thing but do another.

These individuals have case to answer why they had never lifted a finger to assist the poor and ordinary Malays when they had the power and means to do something meaningful for the Malays.

Mahathir’s extreme racism seems to be timed well for six state elections. He is willing to form a pact with PN leaders and put aside their differences for the sole purpose of undermining and subverting the Anwar-led unity government. – July 5, 2023
