“Who is KJ to judge people?” Bung Mokhtar asks

DATUK Seri Bung Moktar Radin has hit back at former health minister Khairy Jamaluddin for accusing him of being an enemy to public health.
The Kinabatangan MP was asked to respond to Khairy’s remark yesterday (June 6) about the former opposing The Control of Smoking Product for Public Health Bill 2023.
“He (Khairy) tabled a law that takes away the rights of the people to smoke,” the Lamag assemblyman retorted when met in Parliament today (June 7).
“Who is KJ? He no longer has a platform, all he is a radio announcer, he is just a ‘hantu raya’. He wants people to stop smoking, but ask him. What is he smoking? Who is he to judge people? Is he friendly to public health
The Kinabatangan UMNO division chief went on to say that he would what Khairy is “smoking” in Parliament next week when the Control of Smoking Product for Public Health Bill 2023 is tabled on June 12.
Bung Mokhtar said that he will say that inside Dewan Rakyat as he has immunity inside the August Hall.
Yesterday (June 6), Khairy, in an Instastory on the popular social media platform, criticised Bung and called him an “enemy of public health” for opposing the Bill.
“He (Bung Mokhtar) opposed it when I was the health minister, and still opposed to it now. (He) probably thinks smoking does not cause cancer. Pakyu Moktar Radin. Thankfully Sabah didn’t fall to you,” the caption of the Instastory read.
Khairy said the last sentence in reference to the infamous incident when Bung had shouted the expletive in the Dewan Rakyat in 2018.
As for the second half of the sentence, the former Rembau MP was referring to the recent attempts by BN Sabah to wrestle leadership of the state government in the East Malaysian territory.
The Health Ministry is seeking to table the Bill, which will include the generational end game (GEG) smoking ban provision affecting those born on Jan 1, 2007 onwards.
“The GEG provision will curb the problem of smoking, especially among the youth, which is the main contributor to the country’s economy, and save 2.07 mil lives,” Health Minister Dr Zaliha Mustafa was reported as saying.
When Khairy was still a health minister, the first version of the bill called “The Control of Tobacco Product and Smoking Bill 2022” was tabled in the Parliament in July 2022.
It was referred to a parliamentary special select committee after the bill met with criticism for being “too harsh”. – June 7, 2023
