KUALA LUMPUR, June 26 — The global energy transition should not be “dictated by any group of countries”, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said today.

He added that Asian countries were not climate change deniers, but have the right to prioritise the development and survival of their nations along with global environmental goals.

“We need to transition, but the transition must be determined by all... subjected to the requirements of each country,” he said at the launch of the Energy Asia 2023 conference at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre here.

“Asia must take every opportunity to further dialogue and actions around how we can responsibly plan to enable every country its right to development and lower carbon aspirations,” he said.

While Anwar did not directly mention which group of countries were referring too, other speakers at the event said that the United Nations’ and the European Union’s push for cleaner energy globally did not adequately take into account the voices and needs of developing nations.

These speakers included Petronas president and group chief executive officer Tan Sri Tengku Muhammad Taufik Tengku Aziz, vice-chairman of credit rating agency S&P Global Daniel Yergin, and secretary-general of the Organisation of the Petroleum Exporting Countries Haitham Al Ghais.

Anwar also said that hydrocarbons would remain key as part of Malaysia's energy transition, with natural gas taking a pivotal role.

He added that the government will be launching two roadmaps relating to the energy transition in the second half of this year – the National Energy Transition Roadmap (NETR), and Hydrogen Economy and Technology Roadmap (HETR).

“The NETR will be complemented by the HETR, which will pave the way for the achievement of an environmentally sustainable, long-term energy security in Malaysia, driven by technological innovation,” he said.
