Montana Derailment Sends at Least 7 Freight Cars Into the Yellowstone River
Three cars with hot asphalt and four cars with molten sulfur fell into the river after a Montana Rail Link train derailed and a bridge collapsed on Saturday, officials said.

At least seven cars from a freight train tumbled into the Yellowstone River in Montana on Saturday after a derailment and a bridge collapse, causing asphalt and molten sulfur cargo to spill into the water, the authorities said.
Officials were investigating whether the derailment or the bridge collapse happened first, as well as how much of the cargo had spread into the river. What led up to the derailment was not immediately known, officials said.
The train cars, operated by Montana Rail Link, derailed around 6:45 a.m. local time as they headed west in Stillwater County, the county’s Disaster and Emergency Services Department said on Facebook.
Andy Garland, a Montana Rail Link spokesman, said no one was injured. Mr. Garland said that two cars were carrying sodium hydro sulfate, but neither had entered the water or been breached.
Three cars of hot asphalt and four cars of molten sulfur were in the river, officials said. Both substances were described as “slow moving.”
David Stamey, the chief of emergency services in Stillwater County, said by phone that both spilled substances solidify quickly in the water. That means the potential harmful effects to the environment could be limited, especially if the spread is restricted, he said.
Ten rail cars in total derailed, Mr. Stamey said. The derailment happened between Reed Point and Columbus, in an area about an hour west of Billings.
Referring to the cars, the Stillwater County Sheriff’s Office said that in a “great stroke of luck, none contained oil.” Officials said there was no expected hazardous materials impact to the towns in the county.
The Yellowstone County Disaster and Emergency Services Department said there had been no “negative impacts” as of early Saturday afternoon.
Video of the scene showed the collapsed bridge with rail cars peeking above the flowing water. It was not immediately clear when the bridge was constructed or when it was last inspected.
Mr. Garland said Montana Rail Link was “committed to addressing any potential impacts to the area as a result of this incident and working to understand the reasons behind the accident.”
In Yellowstone County, which has about 167,000 residents, officials said they planned to shut down water intake for the time it could take for any material to pass by Billings.
Similar measures were put in place at water treatment plants in Stillwater County, where about 9,000 people live.
Officials advised residents “to be aware of the situation and prepared to act should anything change.”
The derailment in Montana came about four months after a train carrying toxic chemicals derailed in eastern Ohio, igniting a fire that covered the town of East Palestine in smoke. That derailment prompted concerns about residents’ health and the environment.

Harvard scientist faked honesty studies -- scholars
Business professor Francesca Gino’s colleagues are reportedly reexamining their work with her
Harvard University business administration professor Francesca Gino hasbeen placed on leaveafter a science blog accused her of faking study results, the New York Times reported on Saturday.
Data integrity blog DataColada published a detailed examination of Gino’s alleged fraud, including falsified study results found in at least four articles. The three behavioral scientists behind the blog had previously been involved in uncovering falsified data in one of Gino’s best-known studies.
However, the findings had already beencited hundreds of times in other papers, with thousands of dollars spent by governments attempting to turn them into policy.
In 2021, Harvard told business school professor Max Bazerman, one of Gino’s co-authors, that theresults of another study from the paper weren’t just irreproducible -- they were fake. The school reportedly provided 14 pages of evidence showing someone haddeliberately tweaked the experimental data, invalidating the results, and suggested the journal which had published and then retracted it add a note explaining this.
DataColada revealed last week how they had previously raised concerns with Harvard about Gino’s fake data, and subsequently published evidence that the star professor hadfudged results in two more papers she co-authored. Bazerman confirmed to the Chronicle of Higher Education that Gino’s name was on four papers currently being analyzed for fraud.
Gino’s fall from grace has had heavy “reverberations in the academic community,” University of Pennsylvania behavioral scientist Maurice Schweitzer told the New York Times, noting thathe was examining the eight papers he co-authoredwith her and suggesting many colleagues of the prolific publisher were doing the same.
The author of several best-selling books on topics including dishonesty and unethical behavior, Gino’s most recent work isironicallytitled ‘Rebel Talent: Why It Pays to Break the Rules in Work and Life’.
Meanwhile, Bazerman used Gino as an object-lesson for a chapter about the perils of putting trust in relationships in his own book, titled ‘Complicit: How We Enable the Unethical and How to Stop’.
“The irony of this being a story about data fraud in a paper on inducing honesty is not lost on me,” he wrote.

Disney CEO Bob Iger is attempting to slash $5.5 billion in spending, including laying off 7,000 workers worldwide.
The layoffs come after a disastrous 2022 that saw Disney stock plummet 44 percent --- its worst year in nearly five decades.
Disney’s financial woes come as the company increasingly embraces transgenderism, critical race theory, and other forms of woke politics in its entertainment aimed at children.
Pixar’s “Elemental,” which had the worst opening of any movie in Pixar history, featured the studio’s first gender “non-binary” character in a theatrically released movie.
