Dr Akmal Saleh says it is important to reconcile with former colleagues who have ‘drifted away’ and have been ‘hurt’.

KUALA LUMPUR: Umno Youth has urged its members to refrain from attacking party members and former members who are not aligned with Umno’s current direction.
Speaking at the wing’s annual assembly here today, Umno Youth chief Dr Akmal Saleh stressed that the party should avoid internal conflicts as unity was the need of the hour.
“Let’s not belittle or mock our members who are ‘outside’. They, too, have contributed to the party and we should not ridicule former members who have served us.
“Those who have strayed should be brought closer, whereas those who have been hurt should be consoled. Umno cannot afford to be divided by engaging in conflicts,” he said.
Umno sacked several warlords before the 15th general election (GE15), including Arau MP Shahidan Kassim, Maran MP Ismail Abd Muttalib and former Padang Besar MP Zahidi Zainul Abidin.
After GE15, the party sacked former Umno Youth chief Khairy Jamaluddin and former Tanjong Karang MP Noh Omar, while Sembrong MP Hishammuddin Hussein, former Umno information chief Shahril Hamdan and former Jempol MP Salim Sharif were suspended for six years.
Akmal said Umno’s “brand” had been severely damaged in the eyes of the people during GE15, and it was a fact the party must acknowledge.
Sharing his experience in campaigning for the election, he said voters hardly discussed the candidates from Umno.
“The voters were more concerned about national issues and internal party issues that occurred before GE15,” he said.
