Many political parties and NGOs are calling on the government to investigate PAS president Tan Sri Abdul Hadi Awang over his statement that the opposition has every right to topple the government.

Siti Kasim, a lawyer and human rights activist, in a video said the utterance of toppling the government is against the law. “[...] back in 2015, the government then actually investigated Clare Rewcastle[-Brown] from Sarawak Report under Penal Code [Section] 124b and 124i [...]. So, if the government then can actually investigate Clare for making statements, not about the government, but actually about Najib and 1MDB case. I don't understand why nothing can be done with Hadi about this.”

Section 124b of the Penal Code states that “it is a criminal offence to commit an activity detrimental to parliamentary democracy by any means, directly or indirectly. The offence is punishable with imprisonment for a term which may extend to twenty years.”

Section 124i of the Penal Code states that "any person who, by word of mouth or in writing or in any newspaper, periodical, book, circular, or other printed publication or by any other means including electronic means spreads false reports or makes false statements likely to cause public alarm commits an offence that is punishable with imprisonment for a term which may extend to five years."

Pakatan Harapan Youth has also urged the police to investigate PAS president Hadi over his statement that the opposition has every right to topple the government. Amanah executive council member Fadhli Umar Aminol Huda said Hadi had gone against the Yang di-Pertuan Agong’s wish when he made that statement.

“His action is irresponsible and clearly against the wish of the Yang di-Pertuan Agong,” he said, adding that this was very unbecoming of an MP.

Fadhli Umar said he hoped the police would investigate Abdul Hadi and those trying to topple a government that had been formed legitimately.

“Such a statement will only lead to trouble and disrupt public order,” he told reporters after lodging a report against Abdul Hadi at the Dang Wangi police headquarters recently.

The police have started investigations on Hadi’s statement to topple the government.
