Seat negotiations ‘more complicated’ now, admits Wee

The MCA president says Barisan Nasional and Pakatan Harapan must show a united front when it comes to the division of seats.

MCA president Wee Ka Siong said the two coalitions were still negotiating seats and this could be finalised next month.

PETALING JAYA: MCA president Wee Ka Siong has admitted that seat negotiations between Barisan Nasional (BN) and Pakatan Harapan (PH) for the coming six state elections were “more complicated”.

Wee said that there were a lot of factors that needed to be considered to reflect the cohesion under the current unity government, Sinar Harian reported.

“This is indeed the main challenge among party leaders. Previously, it was a case of three people sharing a pot of rice when BN was contesting (a seat),” he was quoted as saying, referring to the three main BN components.

Umno and MIC are the other two components.

He said the scenario now was more “complex” as it involved PH and BN.

“We must show we are united in the division of seats.”

The Ayer Hitam MP also said that PH and BN were still negotiating seats and this would likely be finalised next month.

He said there were other aspects that needed to be considered, including the traditional seats of the respective parties.

Since the formation of the unity government, the arrangement is different, especially now that foes are allies, Wee said.

“We need to think as a team so that friends do not become enemies.”
