PH lodges report over Hadi’s alleged defiance against sultan

Terengganu Pakatan Harapan chief claims the PAS president was wrong to go against the wishes of the ruler, who is the head of Islamic affairs in the state.

PETALING JAYA: A police report has been lodged against PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang for allegedly defying the sultan of Terengganu on the issue of politicians giving religious lectures in mosques and suraus in the state.

Last week, the Terengganu Islamic Religious and Malay Customs Council (Maidam) said MPs, assemblymen and senators were not allowed to deliver religious ceramahs in mosques and suraus at any time in the state.

In a statement, Maidam had said state ruler, Sultan Mizan Zainal Abidin was upset that some politicians had given religious lectures or classes, and led Friday prayers without the council’s approval.

In response, Hadi said it was a politician’s responsibility to deliver religious lectures in mosques and suraus, adding that he will continue to give ceramahs there “as usual”.

Terengganu Pakatan Harapan (PH) chief Raja Kamarul Bahrin Shah accused Hadi of defying the sultan, who is the head of Islamic affairs in the state, by making that comment.

He told FMT that Hadi should not have made such a statement in public and that he should have gone through the official channels to state his objection first.

Raja Kamarul added that the Marang MP should be aware about the need to go through the proper protocol having been Terengganu menteri besar from 1999 to 2004.

“As a senior political leader in the state and country, Hadi’s statement gives rise to various negative implications towards the palace as well as the peace and harmony of the local community.

“We ask the authorities, especially the police, to conduct an investigation into Hadi’s statement,” he said.
