Divided BN caused coalition’s downfall in GE15, says Asyraf
Umno Youth chief Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki says BN leaders were ‘taking shots at one another’ before GE15.
PETALING JAYA: Umno Youth chief Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki has attributed Barisan Nasional’s poor showing in the recent general election (GE15) to disunity within the coalition.
He asked why the people would choose to vote for BN if it was divided and its leaders were seen taking shots at one another.
“The reality is that in 2018, we lost due to false accusations (against the party’s leaders). In 2022, we lost because we were divided,
“A house divided against itself cannot stand,” he said when launching the youth wing meeting at the Umno general assembly here today.
Asyraf also appeared to take a veiled dig at party colleague Khairy Jamaluddin who, in his election campaign, claimed to be a “reformist” within the party.
“Some of our candidates also chose to become a ‘hero’ by berating the party, claiming that a vote for them would be a vote to reform a party that is lost, damaged and corrupt,” he said.
Khairy had contested the Sungai Buloh seat for BN after being the MP for Rembau for three terms. He lost to Pakatan Harapan’s R Ramanan by a majority of 2,693 votes.
During a ceramah, Khairy had said Umno had gone astray and that the party had to be “fixed”.
Calling himself an “Umno reformist”, he also claimed the party had “lost its way and needs to go back to its roots”, adding that he wanted to “clean up Umno”.
Asyraf also criticised party leaders who were dropped from the coalition’s list of GE15 candidates for soiling the name of the party and its president, calling them traitors.
Today marks the second day of the general assembly at the party’s headquarters at World Trade Centre Kuala Lumpur. The assembly is the party’s annual meeting for 2022, which was postponed to make way for GE15.
The four-day general assembly comes nearly two months after the party recorded its worst performance in a general election, winning only 26 seats. BN, of which Umno is a component of, won only 30 seats.
