All posts should be contested, say Umno delegates

The Umno general assembly started on Jan 11 and will conclude on Jan 14.

PETALING JAYA: Umno delegates at the party’s general assembly have called for all posts, including that for president and deputy president, to be contested in the upcoming party elections in May.

During the Pemuda, Wanita dan Puteri Umno debates at the assembly, delegates voiced their opinion that the elections were in the “spirit of democracy”.

A spokesman for Melaka Umno Youth, Fairul Nizam, said party president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi is a wise leader and would not clamp down on democracy.

“I am confident that our president is magnanimous. We know who looked after the party when it was under a lot of pressure.

“The youth wing knows who has sacrificed the most for the party and we know who has betrayed us.

“There is no need to worry or doubt. Have the elections and Umno Youth members will make the right decision,” he said after the speech by Umno Youth chief Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki.

Similarly, Negeri Sembilan Umno Youth spokesman Sufian Maradzi said that there should be no move to stop contests for certain posts in the party.

“We are loyal to the party’s struggles and we will not run away from it.

“But we should not be prevented from having party elections because we are confident that the leaders who have looked after the party will continue to be chosen by the delegates,” he said.

Sufian, who is also the Negeri Sembilan Umno Youth chief said after the disastrous outing by Umno and Barisan National in the 15th general election, it was time for Umno to chart a new path in accordance with the needs of members.

“We are not being ‘naughty’ but these are our views. Let us nurture and uphold parliamentary democracy,” he said.

Meanwhile, Pahang Wanita Umno spokesman Juhanis Abd Aziz also concurred that all posts in the party should be contested. She spoke after the policy speech by Wanita chief Noraini Ahmad.

There had been suggestions from Zahid’s supporters that the top two posts not be contested at the party elections, with 140 Umno division heads also agreeing to this.

Zahid said he would leave it to the 160,000 Umno delegates across the country to decide on the competition for the top two posts.

At the same time, Umno number two, Mohamad Hasan said that he is ready to defend his post if it is contested.
