PETALING JAYA: An Umno leader has hit out at Perikatan Nasional chairman Muhyiddin Yassin for insinuating that Ahmad Zahid Hamidi and Anwar Ibrahim were working together.

Wan Agyl Wan Hassan, the federal territories Umno Youth information chief, said Muhyiddin’s remarks only showed how desperate the former prime minister was.

Yesterday, Muhyiddin appeared to play up rumours that Barisan Nasional chairman Zahid and his Pakatan Harapan counterpart, Anwar, were colluding.

According to Muhyiddin, Anwar only attacked him on the campaign trail but not Zahid despite the Umno president’s ongoing corruption trial.

Wan Agyl said Anwar had been attacking BN and Umno during campaigning, and that BN had also attacked PH.

“We attack PH. We have gone all-out against them and we want them to lose. We attack PH as a coalition because we see them as serious players, unlike PN.

“Perhaps Anwar attacks Muhyiddin instead of PN because PN is all about Muhyiddin. There’s nothing else to attack PN on because it is irrelevant,” he said.

He described Muhyiddin’s remarks as “fairy tales” as it was clear that BN could not work with PH because of DAP.

“How can we work with PH when Umno’s grassroots had already rejected the idea of working with Anwar and DAP at our annual general meeting?

“How can we work with PH when our allies in Sabah and Sarawak – Gabungan Rakyat Sabah and Gabungan Parti Sarawak – reject DAP?

“So this is just another fairy tale like how he said only a few people died of Covid-19,” he said.

Muhyiddin’s rivals have criticised him for saying that very few people died from Covid-19 in highlighting the success of the vaccination programme on the campaign trail. The vaccination programme was launched while Muhyiddin was in power.

Wan Agyl said tens of thousands died of Covid-19 in the country, and it was disappointing that Muhyiddin was trying to downplay the tragedy that affected so many in the name of politics.
