TwentyTwo13:
‘Split Malay votes, Anwar’s star power, give PH the edge in Sungai Buloh’
The crowd went berserk. Mobile phones and cameras whirred and clicked in a non-stop flurry.
One would expect such a reception from the arrival of a K-pop star, but instead, the ‘star’ at Taman Subang Perdana in Sungai Buloh, Selangor yesterday, was Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.
Supporters of the coalition cheered for him as he dropped by to throw his support behind Pakatan Harapan’s (PH) candidate for the Sungai Buloh constituency, Datuk R. Ramanan.
Ramanan faces Barisan Nasional’s (BN) Khairy Jamaluddin, Mohd Akmal Mohd Yusof (Pejuang), Ahmad Jufliz Faiza (Parti Rakyat Malaysia), Mohd Ghazali Md Hamin (Perikatan Nasional) and independents Syed Abdul Razak Syed Long Alsagoff and Nurhaslinda Basri.
It was a mad rush to get close to Anwar, as media personnel were almost crushed in the wave of supporters, well-wishers, and the curious, despite shouts of ‘beri laluan kepada media’ (give way to the media) by photographers and camera crews.
There was singing, chanting, and drumming in the carnival-like atmosphere.
Donning a red PH cap and dressed in a bluish-grey shirt and grey slacks, the noise got louder just as Anwar stepped out of his car.
Among those waiting for him on stage was two-term Paya Jaras assemblyman, Mohd Khairuddin Othman. Paya Jaras is a state seat that falls under the Sungai Buloh parliamentary constituency. The Selangor government, however, opted out of holding the state election during GE15.
Khairuddin had earlier stoked the flames with a fiery speech, praising the virtues of Ramanan, while castigating Khairy.
He said although Ramanan and Khairy were labelled as ‘outsiders’, PH’s track record under outgoing MP R. Sivarasa, and the presence of Anwar, gave the coalition hope.
He added that although the majority of residents in Sungai Buloh were Malays, the voters here cared more for those who can work.
“Sivarasa proved it in 2018 when he won the seat by a landslide against Pas, BN and Parti Sosialis Malaysia,” said Khairuddin.
Sivasara won the last general election with a majority of 26,634 votes. Sivarasa secured 43,631 votes – more than his three opponents combined (34,320).
“This year is a seven-cornered fight, but we know it is between Ramanan and Khairy.
“Khairy is banking on the Malay votes. The people here only want those who can work for them. We do not look at race, colour or religion.”
He also said that the Sungai Buloh voters see through Khairy’s rhetoric and false promises that have no substance, as he does not have the full support of his party.
“Ramanan has the backing of everyone in the party and the Sungai Buloh branch.
“Even our president (Anwar) is here. Where is Khairy’s support from BN and Umno?” asked Khairuddin.
“You can see the fervour among the crowd the moment Anwar appeared. He is our ace. Khairy does not have that kind of support.”
Khairuddin said the residents were quick to take up Anwar’s message, as they know a win for Ramanan on Saturday would mean that they are one seat closer for Pakatan Harapan to take Parliament.
“The choice is simple for the people. Do you want Anwar or (Datuk Seri Ahmad) Zahid Hamidi to become prime minister?
“I can tell you now, we (Sungai Buloh) want Anwar to be Malaysia’s 10th Prime Minister,” he added.
