PEKAN – Datuk Seri Najib Razak’s affectionate goodwill remains at the top of people’s minds in his ancestral hometown of Pekan, even though the former prime minister is currently carrying out his 12-year jail sentence after being found guilty of corruption.
It is a reality that Najib’s son, Datuk Mohd Nizar Najib, is well aware of.
After all, Najib was voted as the constituency’s MP for an incredible 42 years, between 1976 and Parliament’s dissolution last month, and served as Bandar Pekan state assemblyman from 1982 to 1986.
Prior to that, his grandfather Tun Abdul Razak Hussein was the Pekan MP from 1959 till his death in 1976.
With such a family record, Nizar, who will be making his electoral politics debut in the upcoming national polls, appears to have a fairly accurate grasp of grassroots opinions towards his father.
He is contesting the Peramu Jaya state constituency, which is within Pekan, for Barisan Nasional (BN).
Voters who will be casting their ballots have overwhelmingly expressed to The Vibes their backing for the Pekan Umno youth leader.
There is a sense of allegiance to Najib and a belief that Nizar will continue to “look after” them.

In an interview with The Vibes, Nizar echoed the voters’ views, saying that many Malaysians are “sympathetic” to Najib’s plight in light of his past efforts to safeguard the people’s welfare.
“There is a lot of sympathy (for Najib) because people don’t like the way he was unfairly treated (during the SRC International Bhd court case).
“Over the years, Dad has built a reservoir of goodwill through his own actions of helping various sections of the community.
“I don’t have to stress about (Najib’s contributions) too much (during my campaign) because people already know from experience (his good work),” he said.
While Nizar has no intentions of turning his back on his bloodline, being the son of Najib and the grandson of Malaysia’s second prime minister, he is determined to blaze his own path to be remembered by.
Abdul Razak was prime minister from 1970 to 1976, while Najib was premier from 2009 to 2018.

“I have to make my own mark… Contesting the Peramu Jaya state seat is a good way for me to build my own personal base and kickstart my network (with the people here).
“I cannot run away from my heritage, but I do hope the people know that I am different from my dad and grandad,” he said.
Incidentally, Najib also served as Pahang menteri besar from 1982 to 1986, which adds to the locals’ endearment towards him.
Nizar also said that his plans for Peramu Jaya include setting up more entertainment and recreational outlets for youth in the area while trying to make the constituency a “thriving hub of activity”.
Peramu Jaya will be seeing a four-cornered battle for the state seat, with Nizar going against Perikatan Nasional’s (PN) Abu Talib Muhammad, Pakatan Harapan’s (PH) Tugimon Abdul Hamid and independent candidate Datuk Tengku Zainul Hisyam Tengku Hussin.
The incumbent Peramu Jaya assemblyman, Datuk Seri Sheikh Mohamed Puzi Sheikh Ali, is now gunning for the Pekan federal seat where he faces four other contenders, namely PH’s Mohd Naim Zainal Abidin, Pejuang’s Datuk Mohammad Radhi Abdul Razak, PN’s Mohd Fadhil Noor Abdul Karim, and Tengku Zainul.
Citizens well taken care of under Najib
Some voters in Pekan, which Najib has held for ten terms, remain adamant in their support for him, claiming that his contributions towards the people far outweigh the accusations against him relating to the 1Malaysia Development Bhd scandal.
In fact, hawker Jailani Othman, 58, asserted that Najib’s graft conviction in the SRC International Bhd case has only strengthened the peoples’ resolve to back the local-born as many believed he had been “unjustly tried”.
“I don’t mean to question the courts’ decision but it looks like (Najib’s) trial was conducted unfairly,” he told The Vibes when met at his fried chicken stall at the Taman Tasik night market here.
“When he was made prime minister, Pekan locals were over the moon since this is his hometown. (The judgment in) his court case has not affected our pride in him.”

He added that during Najib’s tenure as prime minister, citizens were “well taken care of,” with people receiving financial and housing aids while infrastructure developments were also ramped up.
“We tried being under a different government and we found that the people were looked after better by BN,” he noted, referring to Pakatan Harapan’s (PH) brief stint in Putrajaya for 22 months after it had defeated the Najib-led BN administration in the 2018 general election.
“We want BN to return to power since we enjoyed many benefits under their governance,” he stressed.
Najib is currently serving his jail sentence in Kajang Prison after the Federal Court upheld in August his conviction and sentence for misappropriating RM42 million worth of funds linked to SRC International Bhd.
Generosity remembered by constituents
Meanwhile, tissue seller Rafeah Ahmad, 36, said that while she does not completely understand the court proceedings for Najib’s case, the assistance she received overshadows the courts’ guilty verdict.
“I can’t make sense of the legal jargon (for Najib’s court case) but (Najib’s government) provided me with financial aid and food supplies when my house was flooded,” she said.
“Even if people say that Najib misappropriated money, he also gave a lot to the people. I hope he can be released soon.”

Expressing a similar sentiment, first-time voter Muhammad Aliff Iqwan, 20, said that Najib had never been stingy with the people and was quick to offer necessary help when there were concerns brought to his attention.
“It troubles me that he (Najib) is in prison now because he is one of us (from Pekan).
“I don’t think he is the kind of person who could steal money (for his own gain) since he is very generous with the people,” Aliff said when met at the night market here.
He added that many of his friends around his age share his point of view since their families had benefited in various ways from Najib’s “generosity”.
