1,400 flood victims still at 3 relief centres in Baling

BALING: A total of 1,424 flood victims from 93 families were still at three relief centres in Kupang here last night.
Baling district civil defence officer Rasidah Kassim said they were being placed at SMK Jerai, at Surau An-Nur in Taman Mesra Kupang and at SMK Agama Yayasan Khairiah.
Several villages in the area were hit by flash floods following continuous rain on Monday, causing Sungai Kupang to overflow. Seven houses were washed away and about 70 others were damaged.
Meanwhile, the home affairs ministry has mobilised all its agencies under Op Bantu Baling to coordinate assistance and rescue operations in the district.
The minister, Hamzah Zainudin, said the operation was led by Kedah police chief Wan Hassan Wan Ahmad and involved various agencies under the ministry, including the People’s Volunteer Corps (Rela), the immigration, prisons, and national registration departments, and the national anti-drug agency.
